What's New in Stanwood This Fall: Downtown Projects, New Businesses, and the Events Ahead

By Curt Simmons, Broker · WA License 51380 · Keller Williams North Sound

Stanwood is doing more than holding steady this fall, and whether you're weighing a move here or already live here, it helps to know what's actually changing. This is the useful stuff, pulled from the city's own project updates and local reporting, current as of late October 2026.

Downtown is getting a real upgrade

Construction on Depot Park began October 5, 2026 on the east edge of downtown. It's the city's gateway project for the east end: a hard-surface plaza, a covered bandshell, shaded seating, public art, and wayfinding, with completion expected by January 2027. Businesses along the corridor stay open through the work.

Across town, the Twin City Plaza project at 270th and 271st Streets NW is moving forward. City council approved concept plans in June for a new public plaza and gateway on the site of a former gas station, and the city pulled in about $250,000 in state funding for environmental cleanup, which was expected to wrap by the end of September.

New places to eat and shop

  • Warm Beach Grocery, the longtime neighborhood market at 9705 188th Street NW that dates back to 1948, is returning under new ownership with groceries, coffee, and a deli. That kind of revival matters on the rural edge of town.
  • 1866 Trading Post opened in west Stanwood at 9901 270th Street NW, a vendor mall with community-sourced goods announced in April. The Pottery Vault, a paint-and-crafts studio, cut its ribbon in January. And Vivo Italian Bistro, from local hospitality operators, has been serving Italian downtown since mid-2025 with a grand opening that July.
  • Mammoth Burger, a newer burger spot on 271st Street NW, rounds out the recent additions to the dining scene along with new places the mayor highlighted last year, including SEN, Latinos, and Still Water Lounge.

None of these are chain sprawl. They're local operators betting on a growing town, which is a good sign for what downtown and the surrounding corridors are becoming.

The school district just passed a big levy

In the February 10 special election, Stanwood-Camano voters approved a $19.2 million Safety & Infrastructure capital levy by a slim margin, about 53 percent. It runs from 2027 through 2030 and funds roof replacements, HVAC controls, fire alarm upgrades, security cameras, lighting, and network upgrades. If you have kids in the district, that is work that directly touches their school buildings.

The dike repairs are underway

Winter storms damaged a 5,000-foot section of the Skagit Bay Dike west of town, the 100-plus-year-old levee that protects the west side of the delta. Emergency repair work began July 30, 2026, the first of three phases to repair and reinforce the full structure. Flood protection here is an active project, not a settled one, and it's worth knowing for anyone buying on the west edge.

Events to put on the calendar

  • Ghouls Night Out, Saturday, October 31, 3 to 6 PM in downtown Stanwood: family trick-or-treating through the shops.
  • The Lights of Christmas at Warm Beach Camp runs select nights from November 27 into late December, and 2026 is its 30th anniversary. New this year, it's a walk-through experience, with a drive-thru option for anyone who prefers to stay in the car.
  • Light Up Your Holidays tree lighting, Saturday, December 6, 4 to 7 PM in downtown Stanwood: reindeer, holiday shopping, crafts, and Santa.

Bottom line

Stanwood is investing in its downtown, its schools, and its flood defenses at the same time, and new businesses keep betting on the delta. For buyers and residents, that's the kind of forward momentum that shows up in the day-to-day feel of a town, not just in a council agenda.
